Role Swapper TV: Star Trek 21

Star Trek 21

Kirk's hand hovered over the controls.

“All right,” he said. “Let's undo this.”

He never got the chance.

The device emitted a sudden shriek.

“Jim?” McCoy said nervously.

Kirk looked down.

“Uh-oh.”

A brilliant green flash erupted around him. His body began changing before either Spock or McCoy could react. His arms and legs contracted, his uniform vanished, and his entire body compressed into a tiny, green reptilian form. Within seconds, Captain James T. Kirk was gone.

In his place sat a small green lizard.

The device slipped from Kirk's transformed grasp and struck the floor.

Crack!

The machine shattered.

Not merely broke—the intricate alien mechanism exploded into countless fragments that skittered across the chamber.

McCoy stared.

The little green lizard stared back.

“Jim?”

The lizard blinked.

“Jim!”

The lizard scurried beneath the pedestal.

McCoy's face fell.

“Oh, this is just wonderful.”

He looked toward Spock. The Vulcan stood beside him, still possessing his unmistakable pointed ears, dark hair, sharp eyebrows, and other familiar Vulcan facial features. From the neck down, however, the transformation had gone much further. His body had become unmistakably feminine, with a softer figure and altered proportions beneath the sleeveless dress and pleated skirt.

McCoy looked down at himself.

His transformation had been even more complete. There was nothing masculine left about his body. The auburn hair, yellow floral dress, and entirely feminine physique made him look like a completely different person.

He sighed and put an arm around Spock.

Spock, almost instinctively, placed an arm around McCoy.

“What are we going to do?” McCoy asked.

Spock didn't answer immediately.

He looked down at his dress.

He examined the pleats.

He studied the neckline.

Then he looked at McCoy's floral dress.

His expression became strangely contemplative.

“Spock?”

“I have been considering our situation.”

“Good. Because I was thinking we might want to figure out how to get back to the Enterprise.”

Spock shook his head.

“No.”

McCoy blinked.

“No?”

“Our immediate problem is our appearance.”

McCoy stared at him.

“Spock, Jim is a lizard.”

Spock glanced toward the pedestal.

“I am aware.”

“And the only thing that might have changed us back has been smashed into a million pieces.”

“Correct.”

“And you aren't worried?”

Spock looked down at himself again.

“I am considerably more concerned about these dresses.”

McCoy's mouth fell open.

“Those dresses?”

Spock nodded.

“They are completely inappropriate.”

“Inappropriate?!”

“They are old-fashioned.”

McCoy stared at him for several seconds.

“Spock, we've been trapped on an alien planet, our captain has turned into a lizard, and we're wearing clothes from another century.”

Spock considered that.

“Exactly.”

McCoy waited.

Spock continued.

“We need new dresses.”

McCoy's eyes widened.

“New dresses.”

“Preferably something in a contemporary style.”

“You're serious.”

“Entirely.”

Spock examined the pleated skirt again and frowned.

“These clothes Kirk put us in are from the 1970s.”

McCoy looked at his own yellow floral dress.

“You know, I think you're right.”

Spock's expression brightened almost imperceptibly.

“There are several obvious improvements we could make.”

McCoy looked down at himself.

Then at Spock.

Then toward the tiny green lizard hiding beneath the pedestal.

“Jim isn't going to like this.”

The lizard poked his head out.

McCoy sighed.

“Actually, I'm beginning to suspect Jim isn't going to like anything about this.”

Spock offered McCoy his arm.

“Come, Doctor.”

“Where are we going?”

“To find a settlement.”

“For what?”

“New clothing.”

McCoy hesitated.

“And then?”

Spock paused.

“We will determine how to contact the Enterprise.”

McCoy nodded.

“That's /more like it.”

Spock looked down at his dress one final time.

“After we improve our wardrobe.”

McCoy groaned.

“Spock…”

“Yes, Doctor?”

“You've changed.”

Spock raised an eyebrow.

“I am beginning to think that may not be entirely a bad thing.”

Together, the two transformed officers began walking toward the distant lights of an alien settlement, while a very confused little green lizard hurried after them.br>
Neither of them noticed that one tiny fragment of the shattered device still glowed faintly in the dust behind them.
